Mac: Keeping your iWeb comments safe

Mac: Keeping your iWeb comments safe

It might have happened to you aswell if you are using iWeb and the .mac comments that you can activate for your blog entries:

After one publish (publish all) to .mac they're gone!

Apple can/won't help you with this, but with a little trick you can at least keep a semi recent version of them backed up:

As iWeb checks for new comments, they'll be saved into your iWeb domain file, that keeps all your webpage data on your computer.

You can find the file in:

~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites

or, if you're using iWeb '08:

~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites2

Simply back it up as often as you start iWeb and you can at least restore your comments easily up to a certain limit. Do hope that Apple comes with a solution soonish, but this at least limits the damage done.

A couple of months ago my whole system crashed and I lost numerous files and other important information. I recovered but learnt my lesson. I will now back up all!!

I have not yet found a way

I have not yet found a way to directly publish them again from the Domain.sites2 file via the Publish button.

The only way I used was putting them back into the blog by hand. Apparently this is a known issue, so we can only hope to get this automatized somehow.

Unfortunately this is not very comfy and doesn't really help avoiding to lose readded lost comments again.

I lost a bunch of comments

I lost a bunch of comments in a recent change, and luckily I had backed up my domain file. Opened the correct domain file and the comments showed, but it seems that it connected with the server to check for updates or something, as suddenly they were gone from that domain file as well. Is there a proper way to publish the "rescue" domain file so that I don't keep losing those as well? I have the good version safely stored, but am still not able to get it correctly published with comments.
