PDFs not syncing to iPad, iPhone on iOS5 and iTunes 10.5 (iCloud)

I've been suffering from this since the upgrade to iTunes 10.5 and iOS 5:

PDFs I have in iTunes simply didn't sync to my iPad and iPhone.
Resetting the iOS devices, reinstalling iBooks and iTunes, turning off syncing in iTunes, turning on selective synchronisation or just trying to sync everything. None of it seemed to have any form of impact whatsoever.

Making sure that all books have set the media type "Book" didn't help either at first. By accident I stumbled over a slightly different approach which fix it for me.

If you are having the same issues, you might try this:

  1. In iTunes select all your PDFs that refuse to sync.
  2. Now in the "Sorting" tab, change their item type to something which is not Book/Audiobook. (Beware! They will show up in a different section of iTunes, you might need to search for them later. I just gave them names which makes it easy to find them again. You may also just create a temporary playlist and drag the books into it).

  3. The last step: Change the items' Media Kind setting back to book. ONE BY ONE (single item view, not multiple items at once!)

After that just make sure that in your device's sync setting your PDFs checked for syncing!
